It's war!

Do you ever have a week when you feel like it’s one thing after another? However it’s not just minor annoying everyday things, it feels like there is something more to it, even if you can’t put your finger on it.

You feel that these things are put into place to try and distract you or break you. You may feel like you are under attack. Chances are that you are under attack, a spiritual attack. I also use the term spiritual warfare. This is summed up perfectly in Ephesians:

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms”. Ephesians 6:12

It’s warfare because we are in a battle. Whether you like it or not we are in a battle. This battle isn’t against Country A verses Country B, no this battle is against spiritual forces of evil. 

I’ve had my fair share of spiritual warfare. Even recently I had a week of it, it was daily. It got to the point where it became predictable. How did I know it became predictable because I read my Bible. It is all in there and that’s become one of my weapons, alongside prayers.

What is Spiritual warfare?

Spiritual warfare is when evil spirits attempt to influence, tempt or oppress us. Now oppression is different to possession. Oppression is evil spirits influencing from the outside, so a demonic spirit negatively influences a person, without taking control of them. Possession on the other hand is when a demonic spirit influences from within and takes over the person.

“But if I am casting out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God has arrived among you”. Matthew 12:28

At this point it’s important to stress that Christians cannot be possessed by a demon. The reason why Christians can’t be possessed by a demonic spirit is because they have the Holy Spirit within them. Therefore, we can’t house the Holy Spirit and a demonic spirit at the same time. You receive the Holy Spirit when you truly believe and confess that Jesus is Lord and repent of your sins. Repent means saying sorry to God for past actions and activities that do not line up with what the Bible says; and that we will try really hard to not do them again. 

When I say Christians I mean, people who believe that Jesus is Christ, the Son of God and was crucified, died for our sins and rose on the third day. 

Christians don’t believe that Jesus was just a good kind man, like Hindus, or just an enlightened teacher like Buddhists, or just a prophet who didn’t die and went straight to heaven like Muslims, or that Jesus is the Archangel Michael like Jehovah Witnesses or that Jesus and the Satan are spirit brothers like the Mormons (and to a lesser extent Jehovah Witnesses). No, Christians know that Jesus is divine and the Triune God (The Trinity- One God- The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit).

“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. John 14:6

Now you might be thinking well. I know someone who has always been a church going Christian and I saw him get delivered from a demonic spirit at church. Well I would have to ask you if he really had received the Holy Spirit and salvation at that point? Had he really received the Holy Spirit through believing Jesus is God the Son and repenting of all his sins because the Holy Spirit can’t share a body with a demon… just saying? 

A lot of people say they are Christian but do they live their life in a Christ led way, that would enable them to receive the Holy Spirit? When I say Christ led I mean not picking and choosing what sins they can keep doing because “God knows their heart”. God wants us to not live in sin, no matter the consequences for stopping the sinful action. If we continually choose sin, without repentance, then rather than consequences from family, friends or boyfriend/girlfriends, there will be a consequence from God, even if you say you believe in God.

“Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice that will cover these sins. There is only the terrible expectation of God’s judgment and the raging fire that will consume his enemies”. Hebrews 10:26-27

“So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth”. Revelation 3:16

Why does it happen?

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy”. John 10:10

The devil has one aim before he is thrown into the lake of fire and that is to take as many of us with him. How does he do this? By using his tricks and schemes to make us separate from God. The devil doesn’t care how he does it or who he uses as long as he succeeds in us being separated from God. 

What does it feel like?

When under a spiritual attack you can feel emotional heaviness, confusion, a loss of joy, needing isolation, loss of joy, a lack of desire to pray, go to church or read scripture. 

It can also be that a lot of negative things are suddenly happening, which is overwhelming. People are suddenly turning on you, people are bringing chaos and confusion into your life. As well as people’s actions bringing trauma to your life. 

“… yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead”.  Job 1:18

How does it happen?

Like I’ve said Satan will use anything he can access to try and influence, tempt or oppress us. These are some of the ways Satan does this:

People

People who have "open doors" (knowingly or unknowingly) can give Satan and his demonic spirits access to them and Satan can use the demons to perform his spiritual warfare on you. Examples of this is someone coming into your life to bring chaos, distraction or temptations. This can also be people you know well, it doesn’t have to be strangers. 

“But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” Revelation 21:8

People have “open doors” which allow demonic spirits in, through various ways such as: 

• performing in sinful activities and not repenting to God the Father, through Jesus. The list is too long to name here, they are all in the Bible so read it. However, an example is having an affair (adultery). 

• Taking part in new age practices such as using crystals, burning sage, doing tarot cards, astrology- horoscopes, transcendental meditation, New Age visualization, yoga, energy healing, like Reiki.

• Taking part in occult practices such as seeing psychics, mediums, anyone who says they communicate with dead people or their ancestors, using Tarot cards, crystal readers, anyone who does automatic writing, tea leaf readers, astral projecting. (I wrote a blog post that goes over this and new ages practices in more detail here). 

“Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the Lord  your God”. Leviticus 19:31

Witches and Warlocks

If you think witches and warlocks died out in the medieval times, you are very mistaken! They are real and very much around us, they are our neighbours, our colleagues and in some cases our family members. Different cultures have different names for the magic they use, some call it voodoo, obeah or juju, it’s all witchcraft!

These men and women are part of occult religions such as Satanism, Santeria, Wicca, Palo Mayombe and Thelema amongst others. Thelema was started by Aleister Crowley, who is known as “the wickedest man in the world”. He coined the phrase “do what thou wilt” which means “do whatever you want”. You may see “do whatever you want”  in new age prayers, yeah it’s all linked to the occult. He also loved, taught and wrote books about Yoga. Yoga is part of Thelema as a tool for magic and self mastery. 

Even if you know someone who says they aren’t a satanist, they say they are a “good witch” or a “white witch”, just know a witch is a witch. They may be naive and started doing spells from a book they ordered from Amazon, however the information in the book originated from the occult which is not from God, so it leads back to Satan.

These people aren’t flying around on broomsticks but they are being paid by people, some of these people you may know, to cast spells and put curses on others. So your spiritual attack could be the result of someone putting a curse on you or your family (I have another blog post about generational curses here).

You

Yes you! You may be confused to see this but you can bring on your own spiritual warfare. Through you creating open doors by how you are living your life can lead to spiritual attacks, even if you believe in God. If you are taking part in any of the above you are opening yourself to attacks from the devil. 

“And do not give the devil a foothold”. Ephesians 4:27

How do we overcome spiritual attacks?

Cleanse ourselves

First we have to start with ourselves. Believing there is a God isn’t enough, to receive the Holy Spirit, you have to have a relationship with Jesus and want to obey God no matter what, which will lead you to naturally want to change your life and repent of your sins. Doing this lets the Holy Spirit in. Repenting for past new age or occult activities and other past sins will close those doors and make the demonic spirits leave. They will no longer be able to attack you from within, because the Holy Spirit is there. 

Put on the armour of God

Next we have to armour up so we are ready for the spiritual battle, we do this by reading the Word of God, the Bible and following its instructions and allowing this and our faith in Jesus as Lord to allow God The Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit to protect us: 

“Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”. Ephesians 6:13-17

There is also Bible scripture you can read when you feel under attack and use it as prayer such as Psalm 91.

“o evil will befall you,

no plague will approach your tent.

For He will command His angels concerning you

to guard you in all your ways.

They will lift you up in their hands,

so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

You will tread on the lion and cobra;

you will trample the young lion and serpent”. Psalm 91:10-13

Discernment

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will”. Romans 12:2

Some call it a gut feeling, others call it intuition, Christians call it discernment. It’s important to pray to the Father, through Jesus and ask for discernment to show you the heart of the people in your life, especially new people you meet. This allows God to reveal to you what their intentions are, if there is an ungodly spirit operating in them, which could influence the person to bring spiritual attacks on you. When God does this, do not ignore any red flags. 

Fellowship

“People who despise advice are asking for trouble; those who respect a command will succeed”. Proverbs 13:13

It is important to have Christians in your life whether they are friends, family or both who are true believers in Jesus and have a relationship with Him. They don’t just believe in God but obey God, even with the hard decisions. These people will not only love and want the best for you. They will also hold you accountable based on the Word of God because they will not want you to live your life in any way that will open any doors to a spiritual attack, by demonic spirits getting a hold of you. They will also pray for your protection from spiritual warfare and the symptoms that come with it. You can all look out for each other and prevent the isolation that Satan wants.

“The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen”. 2 Timothy 4:18.

This may all be scary to read. However, in all the testimonies I have seen from ex witches and ex warlocks, the one thing they have all said is that they were unable to put curses on people who were truly in Christ and live their life in a spirit filled way (not just saying they are a Christian!). They all said they were the only group of people where their curses didn’t work. They said people in other religions or atheists could be cursed easily. Jesus protects his believers because He has authority over all spirits, including bad ones. The blood that Jesus shed for us can protect us from evil.

Escape

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”. John 3:16

If you are reading because someone has sent it to you, or by some other chance this blog has appeared to you; and you take part in occult practices. You are tired of it all and want to get out. Just know that while you are still breathing it is never too late to seek Jesus and repent, which means telling God you are turning away from your sinful life. 

Once you fully accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, you can then do prayers renouncing all the demonic practices you took part in. It is very important to repent of all your activities and to do your deliverance prayers. God then wipes away your sins and protects you from evil. If you are not sure what to say in your prayer, there are deliverance prayers online you can say, books you can buy or consider speaking to your local church.

“The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore".  Psalm 121:7-8

Healing and Protection

Father God,

I’m thankful to you that Jesus Christ, my Lord and Saviour, defeated all principalities and powers on the cross. 

In the name of Jesus Christ, I rebuke all magic, spells, incantations or curses placed on me, knowingly or unknowingly. May all this be destroyed by the blood of Jesus covering me. 

In Jesus’ name, I ask for protection against any future magic, spells, incantations or curses that are attempted to be placed on me. Please protect me from evil, lies and accusations. 

God please open my eyes to any areas of my life that do not please you and where sin has created open doors and has allowed Satan and demonic spirits to get a foothold. Please cleanse me from anything that gives the enemy access to my life. 

I pray for discernment so I allow the right people access to my life. God if they were not sent from you, please remove them from my life in Jesus name. 

Father God, help me to love what you love and hate what you hate. I want to be obedient to you and I want my will to always be in line with your will.

In Jesus' mighty name.
